If you checked out our last For the Culture series, then you know we don’t shy away from tackling hard topics that impact our community. These events, hosted by The Gathering Harlem’s Community Outreach Team, are about creating platforms to amplify the voices and perspectives of the church and local community around social justice issues. Through creative events, we incorporate candid (and real!) conversation, education, and the arts.

And now we’re back with another thought-provoking and audience-engaging series on gentrification.

Harlem has changed over the years, and for those who are native to this neighborhood, there’s no denying that. Rents are rising and longtime landmarks like Lenox Lounge have come down. When did gentrification begin? How could this have happened? And how does Harlem’s people feel about it?

Join us for an event reflecting on Harlem’s history, the tipping point of gentrification, and the tension in between. We’re excited to present an original short documentary featuring Harlem natives grappling with tough questions. Following the screening, we’ll be hosting a panel of those impacted by gentrification and/or fighting its impact.

There will also be an opportunity for the audience to respond and react throughout the evening.
